Sayings of Ramana Maharshi

08/02/10

" Universe is like a coconut.  If only one can pull out the thick fibre of Illusion  (Maaya) that is enveloping it densely, and, break the hard shell of Ignorance,    then,  one can regale the sweet Nectar of Wisdom  concealed within, and,    taste the delicious kernel of Supreme Bliss ". ( Spring Leaves   by   KMG )

The sages and seers of India, in times immemorial, long time before the advent of modern civilization, driven by an intense desire to get at the Truth, the ultimate basis and substratum of all that is existent, the latent potential behind all this ever-changing creation, ... all that mysteriously springs up, grows up for a while, and then decays and disappears ... ,  turned their mind inwards into deep introspection, and meditated till they had a vision of that Changeless Eternal Self, the Omnipresent and Omnipotent. Since then, during the course of India's long history, many a Seeker undertook that spiritual quest, and attained that Supreme State. In the eighth century AD, the great Adi Sankara reaffirmed the principles of Advaita Vedanta, and wrote illuminating commentaries on our immortal Scriptures. This holy land had the good fortune of being home to great visionaries. In the most recent times, one such was Ramana Maharshi, who ten years younger than Gandhi, lived upto 1950, and attracted seekers from far and near. Today herewith are some sayings of this great Sage of last century :

1.  Happiness is your real nature. Realize your True Self in order to open the store of unalloyed happiness.
2.  Knowing the Self is being the Self, and being means  'existence' -- one's own    existence .. which no one denies any more than one denies one's eyes, although  one cannot see them.
3.  Absolute surrender to the Supreme Lord, whereby the 'I' and 'Mine' are destroyed,    is the one means to realize Immortality.
4.  When the mind, turning inward, enquires 'Who am I ? '  and reaches the heart,    that which is 'I' (ego) sinks crestfallen, and the One Self appears of its own    accord as  " I - I "
5.  Only he who has seen himself, has seen God, since he has lost his individuality,    and nothing remains but  God.
6.  If you find that you are not this body but the Spirit, you will be free from gross or    subtle bodies, and then there will be no limitations.
7.  To realize the Self which is always present, and to remain as That, is the    real attainment.
8.  The self is One, and the Self-knowledge is unique in that  the knowing  self     is itself  the Known Self.
9.  The world is only a projection of the mind, and, the mind is in the Self.
10. If you try to locate the mind, the mind vanishes, and  Self alone remains.
11. To him who is one with the Formless Self, everything is Formless.
12. Existence  or  Consciousness  is the only  Reality. "
Well, above were the outpourings of condensed Wisdom, from a Realized Soul, words that can lead one to eternal knowledge and bliss, life's supreme Goal.
