The topic of the last week was 'Love', the noblest of human emotions (why human alone? It pertains to animals and birds as well, nay, all animate species in creation), the most positive of all emotions. This week I am dwelling on a negative emotion 'Anger'. Many a catastrophe in this world (including wars, including the latest in this decade) was caused consequent of this dark emotion. Its sole achievement has been perpetration of incredible disasters!
Anger is akin to a snake with poisonous fangs. Bitten by that, a person's mind turns venomous causing untold havoc. A person sizzling with anger, is like a burning candle that goes on consuming itself as it burns. Anger is one of the most impulsive outbursts. Here are some musings of mineon this topic:
Anger is a self-inflicted curse.
Anger is a fire that consumes the combustible self.
Anger is a termite that eats up into one's very vitals.
Anger is a blast that shatters all composure, and sense of right perspective.
Anger is a swirling whirlpool that just sucks into itself all energy and vigor, leaving one debilitated
Anger is a flash flood that dislodges all moorings of attachment and love.
Anger is a catastrophe that saps all cool and restraint, and induces one to see things topsy-turvy
Anger is a volcanic eruption that throws out nothing but lava of hatred, revenge and malice
all around, rendering one bereft of sanity.
Anger is the bitterest enemy that mercilessly ruins one's mental balance and well-being.
If this be the case with anger or wrath, then, lust is no better. It is even worse. To the extent that one can resist, overcome, subdue and exterminate these twin devils, to that extent one can live with composure, dignity and peace of mind!
Our age-old Telugu Satakams e.g., Vemana, Sumati etc., are replete with wisdom, rendering practical tips for good conduct and righteous living. Listen to what they have to say concerning anger, which is called 'koapam' in Telugu:
'Tana koapameh tana satruvu, tana saantameh tanaku raksha, daya chuttambou,
Tana santoashameh swargamu, tana duhkkhameh naraka mandru, tadhyameh sumatee! '
'One's anger alone is one's enemy. One's forbearance alone is one's saviour. Kindness itself is
one's kin. One's happiness alone is one's paradise. One's grief itself is one's hell. This is true!'
( Sumatee Satakam )
'Koapamunanu ghanata konchamy poavunu, koapamunanu migula goadu chendu
Koapa madachenayni koarika leedayru, Viswa dhaabhiraama vinura Vema!'
'One's respect and renown would be diminished by anger. Due to anger alone, one would be
subject to grief. If one can subdue anger, many a desire can be fulfilled. Hear to Vema!'
Saint Tyagaraja said: ' Saantamu layka soukhyamu laydu'. No forbearance, no happiness.
In conclusion I wish to reproduce what Lord Krishna said in Geeta:
"The doors of hell are threefold whereby men to ruin pass: the door of lust, the door of wrath and the door of avarice. Let a man shun these three. He who shall turn aside from these three gates of narak, wendeth straight to find his peace, and comes to Swarga's gate!"
