Oxymorons

06/28/10

"  Begin the day with a clean state of mind.  Let not the recollections  of yesterday's  arguments and frictions, misunderstandings and mishaps,  become the pin-pricks of today, and spoil the mood. Brush such thoughts   aside. Go ahead with a positive attitude, sincerely doing whatever you  have to do.  Let it be the 'best today' you ever had ! Good luck,  go ahead !   ( Spring Leaves    by   KMG )

Would like to touch upon a topic in English usage, the 'Oxymoron'. A combination of incongruous words. Two contradictory terms huddled together !  Like 'ugly and beautiful', or  'humble and proud', or 'miserly and extravagant' etc.  How can that be ?  Is it possible at all ?  Yes, see the following, used very often :

1.  Clearly misunderstood
2.  Exact estimate
 3.  Small  crowd
4.  Act naturally
5.  Found missing
6.  Fully empty
7.  Pretty ugly
8.  Seriously funny
9.  Only choice
10.  Original
11.  Deafening silence

12.   Happily  married   (?)  ( ! )

 Doesn't  that sound interesting ?

Now, to conclude, here is  an  inspiring  and  invigorating statement, to instil hope in hopeless situations !

" An optimist is one   who finds an opportunity   in  every calamity,  and,  a pessimist is one   who finds  a calamity  in every opportunity "
